History of Fedora
How Fedora Got Its Name
Fedora was first planned out as a town in 1881. At first, it was called Miner Center. However, its name was changed in 1896. This was because there were many other towns in South Dakota named Miner or Miner Center.
People say the town got its name from fedora hats. A very early store owner in the area used to sell these hats.
Aviation Incident in 1943
On June 13, 1943, a sad event happened over Fedora. Two B-17 bomber planes crashed during a training exercise. These planes were from the 393rd Bomb Group at the Sioux City Army Air Base.
One of the planes crashed right away. The other plane managed to land in a creek bed a few miles away. Sadly, eleven airmen lost their lives in this accident.
Population of Fedora
The Census Bureau started counting Fedora as a special area in 2010. This area is called a CDP. In the 2020 census, the population of Fedora was 26 people.
