About Felice Torelli

Felice Torelli came from a family of artists in Verona, Italy. His brother, Giuseppe Torelli, was a famous violinist and composer. Felice's wife, Lucia Casalini, was also a painter, and she mostly painted portraits. Their son, Stefano Torelli, also became a painter.

When he was young, Felice learned painting from Santi Prunati in Verona. Later, he continued his training with Giovanni Gioseffo dal Sole in Bologna.

Founding an Art Academy

In 1710, Felice Torelli helped start an important art school in Bologna called the Accademia Clementina. This academy was a place where artists could learn and share ideas. A well-known painter named Giuseppe Maria Crespi was also part of this academy.

Felice Torelli taught many students at the academy. Some of his pupils included the brothers Ubaldo Gandolfi and Gaetano Gandolfi. His nephew, Giovanni Giorgi, also studied with him.

Notable Artworks

Felice Torelli painted many religious artworks for churches. For example, he painted a scene called Martyrdom of St. Maurelius for the Ferrara Cathedral. He also created St Vincent curing a lunatic woman for a church in Faenza.

His paintings, especially altarpieces (artworks placed above altars), can be found in churches in many Italian cities. These include Rome, Turin, and Milan.
