Carlo Filippo Antonio Spinola y Colonna (born in Madrid, Spain, on November 11, 1665 – died July 30, 1721) was an important Spanish nobleman. He served as the Viceroy of Sicily from 1707 to 1713. This was during a big conflict called the Spanish Succession War.
Carlo Spinola was the oldest son of Paolo Spinola, 3rd Marquis of the Balbases. His father was the Governor of the Duchy of Milan for a few years. After his father passed away, Carlo became the 4th Duke of Sesto and the 4th Marquis of the Balbases. His mother was Anna Colonna. She was the daughter of Marcantonio V Colonna, who was a Prince of Paliano.
Family Life
Carlo Spinola married Isabel María de la Cerda y Aragón in Madrid on September 20, 1682. She was the daughter of Juan Francisco de la Cerda, 8th Duke of Medinaceli. Carlo and Isabel had two sons and seven daughters together.
His Eldest Son
Their oldest son was Ambrosio Gaetano Spinola y de la Cerda. He was born in Milan, Italy, on January 20, 1696. After his father, Carlo, died in 1721, Ambrosio became the 5th Duke of Sesto and the 5th Marquis of the Balbases. He later became a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1737.
Role in History
Carlo Spinola played a key role during the Spanish Succession War. He was the Viceroy of Sicily, which meant he governed the island for the Spanish king.
After the War
After the war ended, the Treaty of Utrecht was signed. This treaty changed many things in Europe. Spinola and his soldiers were told to leave Sicily. They then sailed to Barcelona. There, they helped in the Siege of Barcelona (1713–14), which was a very important battle.
Music Dedications
Carlo Spinola was also a patron of the arts. This means he supported artists and musicians. Two famous composers dedicated their music to him:
- Tomaso Albinoni dedicated his 12 Concerti a cinque, Op. 5 (from 1707), to Spinola.
- Giacomo Facco dedicated his 12 Concerti a cinque "Pensieri Adriarmonici", Op. 1 (from 1716–1719), to him as well.
