Paolo Spinola (born February 24, 1628 – died December 24, 1699) was an important Spanish nobleman and diplomat. He held several high titles, including the 3rd Marquis of the Balbases and the 3rd Duke of San Severino and Sesto. Paolo Spinola came from an Italian family but served the Spanish Crown.

Paolo Spinola was born in 1628. His father was Filippo Spinola, 2nd Marquis of Los Balbases. His mother was Geronima Doria. Paolo's grandfather was Ambrogio Spinola. Ambrogio was a famous Italian-Spanish general and banker.

Important Roles and Diplomacy

Paolo Spinola served as the Governor of the Duchy of Milan from 1668 to 1670. The Duchy of Milan was an important area in Italy that was controlled by Spain at the time. After his time as governor, Gaspar Téllez-Girón, 5th Duke de Osuna took his place.

Spinola also worked as a diplomat for Spain. He was the Spanish ambassador to Vienna (the capital of Austria) from 1670 to 1676. After that, he became the ambassador to Paris (the capital of France) in 1677. Ambassadors are like official representatives of their country in another nation.

In 1653, Paolo Spinola married Anna Colonna in Rome. Anna was the daughter of Marcantonio V Colonna, who was a Prince of Paliano. Paolo and Anna had several children together:
