Ferdinand Alfred Friedrich Jodl (born November 28, 1896 – died June 9, 1956) was a German general who played a part in World War II. He was known for leading the Mountain Corps Norway during a battle called the Petsamo–Kirkenes Offensive. His older brother, Alfred Jodl, was also a very important military leader.

Ferdinand Jodl: A German General
Early Military Life
Ferdinand Jodl joined the German Army in August 1914. This was at the very start of World War I. He served as a Lieutenant in a Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment. He stayed in the army even after World War I ended in 1918.
Later, he became a general staff officer. This meant he was a key planner and organizer for military operations.
World War II Service
At the beginning of World War II, Jodl worked with the XII Corps. He then moved to the XXXXIX Mountain Corps. These were large military units.
Leading Mountain Troops
From 1942, Ferdinand Jodl served in Finland and North Norway. He first worked as the chief of staff for the 20th Mountain Army. After that, he became the commander of the XIX Mountain Corps.
For his leadership of this corps, he received a very important award. It was called the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. He got this award in January 1945. By the end of the war, he was in charge of all German forces in North Norway. These forces were known as Army Detachment Narvik. He had reached the high rank of General of Mountain Troops.
Awards and Legacy
Ferdinand Jodl received several important military awards during his career. The most notable was the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. This was a very high honor given for bravery and leadership in battle. He received it on January 13, 1945.
Ferdinand Jodl passed away in Essen on June 9, 1956. He was 59 years old. He was buried in Frauenchiemsee, a beautiful island in Bavaria.
