Ferenc Münnich (born November 18, 1886 – died November 29, 1967) was an important Hungarian politician. He was a member of the Communist Party. He served as the leader of Hungary's government, called the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, from 1958 to 1961.

Early Life and First World War
Ferenc Münnich was born in Seregélyes, which was part of Austria-Hungary at the time. He grew up in a changing world.
During World War I, he joined the Austro-Hungarian Army. He fought on the Eastern Front. In 1915, he was captured by enemy forces. He was then sent to a prison camp in Siberia, a cold region in Russia. He was freed in 1918 and returned home to Hungary.
Political Beginnings
After returning to Hungary, Ferenc Münnich became involved in politics. He took part in the government of the 1919 Hungarian Soviet Republic. This was a short-lived socialist state.
Later, he traveled to Spain. He fought in the Spanish Civil War. This war took place from 1936 to 1939. He was a leader, known as a commissar, in a group called the Rakosi Battalion. This group was part of the XIII International Brigade.
Return to Hungary
After World War II, Ferenc Münnich came back to Hungary. He had been living in exile, meaning he was away from his home country. In October 1945, he joined the Hungarian Communist Party. He became a top police chief in the city of Budapest.
Role in 1956
In 1956, a big event happened in Hungary. It was called the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. At first, Ferenc Münnich was part of the government led by Imre Nagy. He served as the Minister of the Interior from October 27 to October 31. This role meant he was in charge of internal security and police.
However, he later left Hungary and went to the Soviet Union. He returned to Hungary on November 4, 1956, with János Kádár. He then served in a new government. In this government, he was both the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Defence. He held these important jobs until March 1, 1957. A few months later, he helped create a group called the Worker's Militia.
Leading the Government
From 1958 to 1961, Ferenc Münnich became the Chairman of the Council of Ministers. This made him the head of the Hungarian government. He worked to lead the country during this time.
Later Years
Ferenc Münnich continued to be an important figure. He received special honors from the Soviet Union. In both 1965 and 1967, he was given the Lenin award. This was a very high award. He passed away on November 29, 1967, in Budapest, Hungary.
