Fergus McFadden's Rugby Journey

Starting Out in Rugby

Fergus started playing rugby when he was a young boy. He joined a team called Cill Dara RFC in Kildare during the 1990s. Later, he continued to play rugby at Clongowes Wood College, a well-known school for the sport.

He also played for University College Dublin (UCD). In 2006, he earned "university colours" for playing in a special match against Trinity College Dublin.

Playing for Leinster

Fergus McFadden made his first professional appearance for Leinster in the Celtic League on September 28, 2007. This game was against Cardiff Blues at Arms Park.

During his time with Leinster, Fergus helped the team win many important championships:

  • He won the Celtic League (now called the United Rugby Championship) in 2008.
  • He also won the top European club competition, the Heineken Cup, three times: in 2011, 2012, and 2018.
  • In total, he played 184 games for Leinster. He scored 444 points and made 29 tries.

Fergus announced his retirement from rugby on May 4, 2020. His contract with Leinster was ending, and the rugby season was cut short because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Playing for Ireland

Fergus McFadden also played for the Ireland national team.

  • In 2009, he played for the Ireland A team (also known as the Ireland Wolfhounds) in the 2009 Churchill Cup in the USA. He scored two tries in a game against Georgia.
  • In January 2011, Fergus earned his first cap (meaning his first game) for the main Ireland team. This was during the 2011 Six Nations Championship against Italy.
  • He scored his first try for Ireland in the same tournament, playing against France.
  • By the end of 2018, Fergus had played 34 games for Ireland. He scored 50 points and made 10 tries for his country.
