She studied chemical engineering at Boğaziçi University. She earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), in 1984.
Later, she continued her studies in environmental engineering. In 1986, she received her Master of Science (M.S.) degree from the Istanbul Technical University (ITU). For her master's project, she wrote about how metals mix and what that means for technology.
She then earned her highest degree, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), in environmental engineering from ITU in 1990. Her Ph.D. work focused on removing nitrogen from very dirty water.
