Fernand Point (born February 25, 1897 – died March 4, 1955) was a famous French chef and restaurant owner. Many people call him the father of modern French cuisine, which means he helped create the way French food is cooked today. He started a very famous restaurant called La Pyramide in a town called Vienne, which is close to Lyon in France.

Early Life and Cooking Start

Fernand Point was born in Louhans, a town in France. His family owned an inn, which is like a small hotel with a restaurant. He started cooking there when he was only ten years old! As he grew up, he moved to Paris, the capital of France. There, he worked in some of the city's best restaurants. He even worked with the father of another famous chef, Paul Bocuse, at the Hôtel Royal [fr]. This hotel is in a beautiful place called Évian-les-Bains.

His Amazing Career

Fernand Point learned his cooking skills from the best. He trained at famous places like Foyot in Paris, the Bristol Hotel in Paris, and the Majestic in Cannes. In 1922, when he was 25 years old, he and his family moved to Vienne. This city is in southeast France, not far from Lyon. They opened a restaurant there. Just two years later, his father gave the restaurant to Fernand. Fernand then changed its name to La Pyramide.

La Pyramide: A Famous Restaurant

Fernand Point opened his own restaurant, Restaurant de la Pyramide, when he was 24. It was located about 20 miles (32 km) south of Lyon in the town of Vienne. This restaurant became incredibly famous. It was awarded three Michelin stars. Michelin stars are a very special award given to restaurants that serve amazing food. Getting three stars means it's one of the best restaurants in the world!

Ma Gastronomie: His Cookbook

Fernand Point wrote a book called Ma Gastronomie. It was first published in French in 1969, after he had passed away. The book is filled with about 200 recipes. These recipes came from notes that Chef Point had written down. Another famous chef, Charlie Trotter, said that Ma Gastronomie was the most important cookbook ever. This shows how much influence Fernand Point had on the world of cooking.
