Fernando Atzori (born June 1, 1942 – died November 9, 2020) was a famous boxer from Italy. He was a flyweight, which means he competed in a lighter weight class. Fernando won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in 1964. After the Olympics, he became a professional boxer. He even won the European boxing title in 1967 and held it for many years! Fernando Atzori stopped boxing in 1975.

Fernando Atzori's Olympic Journey

Fernando Atzori represented Italy at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He competed in the flyweight boxing division. His journey to the gold medal was very impressive!

Path to Gold

Fernando did not have to fight in the first round. This is called a "bye."

  • In the Round of 16, he won against Darryl Norwood from Australia.
  • Next, in the Quarterfinal, he defeated John McCafferty from Ireland.
  • In the Semifinal, Fernando won against Robert Carmody from the USA.
  • Finally, in the Gold Medal match, he faced Artur Olech from Poland. Fernando won this fight too, even though he had an eye injury. This victory earned him the gold medal!

Professional Boxing Career

After his Olympic success, Fernando Atzori became a professional boxer. This means he started boxing for money.

European Champion

In 1967, Fernando won the European boxing title. This was a very big achievement! He was able to defend his title nine times, meaning he kept winning and staying champion. He finally lost the title in 1972. However, he managed to win it back again later, but lost it once more in 1973. Fernando Atzori retired from boxing in 1975.
