Juan Fernando Cordero Cueva (born May 27, 1952) is an Ecuadorian politician and architect. He is also known as Corcho Cordero. He has held many important jobs in Ecuador's government.
He was the mayor of Cuenca from 1996 to 2005. Later, he became a member of the Ecuadorian Congress. In 2008, he led the group that wrote Ecuador's new constitution. From 2009 to 2013, he was the President of the National Assembly, which is like the country's main law-making body. He also served as the Minister of National Defence from 2014 to 2016.

Early Life and Education
Fernando Cordero was born in 1952 in Cuenca, Ecuador. His parents were Leonardo Cordero Vega and Beatriz Cueva Jaramillo. His grandfather, Carlos Cueva Tamaríz, was also a well-known politician.
Fernando Cordero studied architecture at the University of Cuenca. He later became the dean (a leader) of the university's architecture department. He graduated in 1975. He also studied in Brazil and earned a master's degree in urban planning in Spain in 2007. Since 1977, he has taught at his old university.
Political Career
Cordero began his political journey by serving his hometown.
Mayor of Cuenca
In 1996, he was elected as the mayor of Cuenca. He was re-elected for a second term in 2000. During his time as mayor, he was recognized for his good work. In 2004, he won an award for being the best mayor among 22 participants in Ecuador. He served as mayor until 2005.
National Leadership Roles
After being mayor, Cordero became involved in national politics. In 2006, he was elected as a member of the Ecuadorian Congress. He received the most votes of any candidate in the country.
In 2007, he joined the Ecuadorian Constituent Assembly. This group was formed to write a new constitution for Ecuador. Cordero Cueva was chosen to be the President of this important assembly in 2008.
Later, he became the President of the National Assembly. He held this position from 2009 to 2013, leading the country's legislative work.
Minister of National Defence
In September 2014, Fernando Cordero Cueva was appointed as the Minister of National Defence. This meant he was in charge of the country's military and defense. He served in this role until March 2016. He took over from María Fernanda Espinosa and was succeeded by Ricardo Patiño.

Fernando Cordero Cueva is married to Nelly Carvallo. They have three children together.
