Fernando Enríquez de Velasco (born around 1466, died 1545) was an important Spanish nobleman. He held the title of the first Duke of Medina de Rioseco. He was also the fifth Admiral of Castile, which was a very powerful position in the navy during his time.

Fernando's Life Story

Fernando Enríquez de Velasco was born around 1466. His parents were Alonso Enríquez and María de Velasco. Fernando became the head of his family and inherited important titles in 1538. This happened when his older brother, Fadrique Enríquez, passed away without having any children.

King Charles I of Spain recognized Fernando's loyalty and hard work. Because of his services to the Crown, the King made him a Duke. This was a very high honor.

Fernando married María Girón. She was the daughter of Juan Téllez-Girón, who was the second Count of Ureña. Fernando and María had five children together:

  • Luis Enríquez y Téllez-Girón, who would later take over his father's titles.
  • Fadrique Enríquez Girón, who became a commander in the Order of Santiago. He also served King Charles I as his personal attendant (Mayordomo).
  • Fernando, who became a Maestrescuela in Salamanca. He was also an Archdeacon in Madrid, which is a high church position.
  • María Luisa Girón Enríquez, who married Antonio Alonso Pimentel y Herrera de Velasco. He was the third Duke of Benavente.
  • Alonso, who became an Abbot in Valladolid, another important church role.
