Political Career
New York City Council
From 1982 to 1987, Ferrer was a member of the New York City Council. This group helps make laws for the city. While on the council, he helped create a law that made sure interpreters were available in city emergency rooms. He also worked to ensure fair treatment for all people and helped create a group to review police actions.
Leading The Bronx
In 1987, Fernando Ferrer became the Bronx Borough President. He took over when the previous leader left. At that time, the Bronx was facing many challenges.
During his 14 years as Borough President, Ferrer worked hard to improve the area. Many new homes were built for about 66,000 families. Crime rates went down, especially in the South Bronx. There was also a steady increase in business and real estate investment.

Fernando Ferrer ran for Mayor of New York City three times.
1997 Mayoral Campaign

2001 Mayoral Campaign
Ferrer ran for mayor again in 2001. He won the first round of voting for the Democratic nomination. However, he did not get enough votes to win outright. He then lost a second round of voting to Mark Green. Ferrer, who is of Puerto Rican descent, received a lot of support from Hispanic voters.
2005 Mayoral Campaign
In 2005, Ferrer was the Democratic candidate for mayor. He won the primary election on September 13, 2005, which meant he would run in the main election.
During this campaign, Ferrer faced some challenges. He made comments about a past incident that caused some people to be upset. This affected his popularity, especially among African-Americans.
