Fernando Joe Gaitan Jr., born on August 22, 1948, is a very experienced judge in the United States. He works as a senior judge for the federal court in the Western District of Missouri.
Early Life and Education
Fernando Gaitan Jr. was born in Kansas City, Kansas. He finished high school at Sumner High School in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1966.
He then went to Donnelly College from 1967 to 1968. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Pittsburg State University in 1970. Later, he received his law degree, called a Juris Doctor, from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 1974.
His Career as a Judge
Before becoming a federal judge, Mr. Gaitan worked as a lawyer. From 1974 to 1980, he was an attorney for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
He then became a judge in Missouri. He served on the Jackson County Circuit Court from 1980 to 1986. After that, he was a judge on the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, until 1991.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On May 16, 1991, President George H. W. Bush chose Fernando Gaitan to be a judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri. This is a very important job in the federal court system.
The United States Senate approved his nomination on July 18, 1991. He officially started his new role as a federal judge on August 2, 1991.
He served as the Chief Judge for this court from 2007 to 2014. Being the Chief Judge means he was in charge of the court's operations. On January 3, 2014, he took on a new role as a senior judge. This means he still works for the court but with a reduced workload.
