Fernando Niño's Early Life and Church Roles
Fernando Niño de Guevara was born in Toledo, Spain. He began his journey in the church in the 1530s.
Becoming a Bishop
On August 18, 1539, Pope Paul III chose him to become the Bishop of Orense. This was an important role in the church. A bishop is a senior member of the Christian clergy. They are usually in charge of a diocese, which is a specific area of churches.
Just a few months later, on October 5, 1539, Fernando Niño was officially made a bishop. This ceremony is called a consecration.
Moving to Granada and Beyond
In 1542, Pope Paul III gave Fernando Niño a new, even bigger job. On March 22, 1542, he was appointed the Archbishop of Granada. An archbishop is a bishop of a main or metropolitan archdiocese. This means they oversee other bishops in a larger region.
His final major appointment came on October 8, 1546. He was named the Patriarch of West Indies. A patriarch is one of the highest-ranking bishops in some Christian churches. At the same time, he also became the administrator for the Bishop of Sigüenza. He continued to serve as the Patriarch of West Indies until he passed away on September 16, 1552.
During his time as a bishop, Fernando Niño also helped to consecrate, or officially appoint, other important church leaders. One person he helped consecrate was Pedro Guerrero Logrono, who later became the Archbishop of Granada in 1547.
