Fernando "Cobo" Pereira is a major in the military of São Tomé and Príncipe. For a short time, he was the Acting President of this island nation.
A Brief Time as Leader
On July 16, 2003, Major Pereira led a group that took control of the government of São Tomé and Príncipe. This event is known as a coup. A coup is when a group, often military, takes control of a government suddenly and usually by force.
This happened while the elected President, Fradique de Menezes, was out of the country. However, Major Pereira gave up power just one week later, on July 23, 2003. This was part of an agreement to return the country to its elected leaders.

Fernando Pereira has a mixed heritage. His family roots are in both Cape Verde and Angola. He is also a father to ten children.
