His father was Esteban Fernández de Castro, who was the Lord of Lemos and Sarria. His mother was Aldonza Rodríguez de León. Fernando's family had many important people, including his maternal grandparents. His grandfather, Rodrigo Alfonso de León, was a son of Alfonso IX of León, a king.

When his father, Esteban Fernández de Castro, died, Fernando became the new Lord of Lemos and Sarria. This meant he was in charge of these lands. In 1293, Fernando married Violante Sánchez of Castile. She was the daughter of Sancho IV of Castile, who was the King of Castile. Fernando was one of the strongest and most important nobles in Galicia, just like many others from the House of Castro.

In 1304, Fernando decided to fight against Ferdinand IV of Castile, who was the king at that time. Fernando attacked Philip of Castile, who was in Galicia. Philip was trying to take over a castle called Monforte de Lemos. Fernando's helpers tried to get him to make peace with Philip. Philip was also the brother of Fernando's wife, Violante. But they could not agree, and Fernando Rodríguez de Castro was killed in the battle that followed.
