Fernando Manuel Romay Pereiro was born on September 23, 1959. He is a famous Spanish retired basketball player. He played as a center, which is a key position in basketball.
Fernando Romay is known for being one of the best players in the history of Real Madrid basketball. Many also consider him one of the top players in all of Spanish basketball history. He is very tall, standing around 7 feet (2.13 meters) high!
He played for his home country, Spain, in two Summer Olympic Games. He competed in the Olympics in 1980 and again in 1984. At the 1984 Olympics, he helped the Spanish national team win a silver medal.

Playing Basketball for Clubs
Fernando Romay played for several basketball clubs during his career. Most of his time was spent with Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in Spain. With Real Madrid, he won many important international titles.
Winning International Titles
Romay helped Real Madrid win the FIBA Intercontinental Cup four times. These wins were in 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1981. They also won the FIBA European Super Cup three times (1984, 1988, 1989).
He also won the EuroLeague championship twice (1978, 1980). The EuroLeague is one of the most important basketball competitions in Europe. Real Madrid also won the FIBA Saporta Cup three times (1984, 1989, 1992) and the FIBA Korać Cup in 1988.
Winning Spanish Titles
Besides international titles, Romay won many championships in Spain. With Real Madrid, he won the Spanish League championship eight times.
He won the Spanish LEB Primera División four times (1977, 1979, 1980, 1982). Later, he won the Spanish ACB League four times (1984, 1985, 1986, 1993). He also helped his team win the Spanish Cup five times (1977, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1993). In 1984, they won the Spanish Supercup.
Fernando Romay was once the player with the most blocked shots in the Spanish ACB League. He had 671 blocked shots! This record was later broken by another player, Fran Vázquez, in 2016.
Playing for Spain's National Team
Fernando Romay was an important player for the senior Spanish national basketball team. He proudly represented Spain in many major basketball tournaments around the world.
Olympic Games
He played for Spain at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Four years later, he played at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. At the 1984 Games, his team won a silver medal, which is a great achievement!
Other Major Tournaments
Romay also played for Spain in other big FIBA tournaments. These included the 1981 EuroBasket, the 1982 FIBA World Cup, and the 1983 EuroBasket. At the 1983 EuroBasket, he won another silver medal with the Spanish team.
He continued to play for Spain in the 1985 EuroBasket, the 1986 FIBA World Cup, the 1987 EuroBasket, and the 1990 FIBA World Cup.
Trying American Football
After he stopped playing professional basketball in October 1995, Fernando Romay tried a different sport. He became an American football player for a team called Madrid Panteras. On June 8, 1996, his team won the Spanish league Bowl. Even though he didn't play in the final game, it was a new experience for him!

After his sports career, Fernando Romay started appearing on Spanish television. He is a regular guest on different TV shows. One show he was on is Mira Quien Baila!, which is the Spanish version of the popular dance competition show Dancing with the Stars.
