Fernando Ruiz de Castro facts for kids
Fernando Ruiz de Castro (died in Bayonne, 1377) was a important nobleman from Galicia. He belonged to the powerful House of Castro family. He was known as the third Count of Lemos, Trastámara, and Sarria. People often called him "Toda la lealtad de España" (meaning "All the loyalty of Spain"). This special name came from a message on his tomb in Bayonne.
Fernando was the son of Pedro Fernández de Castro and Isabel Ponce de Leon. He was the brother of Juana de Castro, who married King Peter I of Castile. He was also the half-brother of Inês de Castro, who was close to King Peter I of Portugal. Another half-brother was Álvaro Pires de Castro, who led the Portuguese part of the House of Castro family.
A Loyal Supporter
Fernando Ruiz de Castro became a very important person for King Peter of Castile. He held high positions, serving as a main advisor and a flag-bearer for the kingdom.
During the Castilian Civil War, Fernando was King Peter's strongest supporter. He kept fighting for King Peter's side against the House of Trastámara even after the king died in 1369. His loyalty was famous throughout the land.

Fernando Ruiz de Castro was married twice and had children.
First Marriage
In 1354, Fernando married Juana Alfonso. She was a daughter of King Alfonso XI of Castile. They had two children together:
- Pedro de Castro – He later had to leave the country and died in England.
- Guterre de Castro
Second Marriage
After his first marriage ended, Fernando married Eleanor Enriquez in 1367. Eleanor was the Lady of Melgar. She was the daughter of Enrique Enriquez and Urraca Ponce de Leon. This marriage did not result in any children.
Other Children
Fernando also had a son with Mília Gonçalves, who was the Lady of Assequins. This son was:
- Álvaro Pires de Castro, Lord of Alcáçovas – He started a new branch of the Castro family in Portugal.
