A Look at Melgar's Past
Melgar de Fernamental has a very old history, going all the way back to the time of the Roman Empire. An ancient Roman city called Dessobriga was once located near where Melgar is today.
Many important Roman roads passed through this area. One of the most famous was the Hispania-Italica road, which connected major Roman cities. Another road, the Saldania Roadway, started by the Pisuerga river, right across from the town. The Pisuerga Roadway also connected nearby towns, running through the fertile land at the foot of Melgar. These roads helped people travel and trade many centuries ago.
Over the years, several smaller towns and villages have joined Melgar de Fernamental. This happened in different centuries, making Melgar bigger and more important. For example, in the 1970s, places like Santa María Ananúñez and San Llorente de la Vega became part of Melgar.
