Fernway was the very first planned housing area in Cranberry Township. It was built way back in the 1950s. For a while, Fernway was known as a "census-designated place" (CDP). This is a special area that the government uses for counting people in a census. However, this name was later removed. Officials in Cranberry Township found that people often thought Fernway was the name of the whole township when they looked it up online.
