The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden is a huge music hall in Baden-Baden, Germany. It's the biggest opera and concert house in Germany! Up to 2,500 people can watch shows there.

A Building with a Past

From Train Station to Concert Hall

This amazing building wasn't always a concert hall. It was first built in 1904 as the main train station for Baden-Baden. Before that, an older station from 1845 connected the city center to the main railway line. The building served as a busy train station for many years. However, the train line closed in 1977.

A New Purpose for an Old Building

After the train station closed, the building found a new life. It was transformed into the Festspielhaus. The new parts of the building were designed to fit perfectly with the old train station. Today, the original station building holds the ticket office and a restaurant called Aida. It also has a special music space for kids called Toccarion. This fun space is supported by the Sigmund Kiener Foundation.

The Grand Opening

The famous architect Wilhelm Holzbauer from Vienna designed the new concert hall. It officially opened its doors on April 18, 1998. When it first started, it received some money from the public. But soon, it became the first opera and concert company in Europe to be funded completely by private money. This means it didn't rely on government funding to operate.

Music Awards and Recognition

Honoring Musical Talent

From 2003 to 2015, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden Cultural Foundation presented a special award. It was called the Herbert von Karajan Music Prize. This prize honored talented musicians and their contributions to music.
