What the Story is About
Fever Crumb is a 14-year-old girl. She grew up with an engineer named Dr. Giddeon Crumb. Fever is learning to be an engineer herself. She is part of the Order of Engineers in London. At this time, London is not yet a moving city.
Fever leaves her quiet life to help an archaeologist, Kit Solent. He is working on a secret project. Soon after she starts helping Kit, a dangerous person named Bagman Creech recognizes her. Bagman is known for hunting down and getting rid of anyone connected to the Scriven.
Who are the Scriven?
The Scriven were a very old group of people. They were different from humans and used to rule London. But people fought back and made them leave. Bagman Creech wants to make sure no Scriven are left.
It turns out that Fever's mother, Wavey Godshawk, is a Scriven. Even more, she is the daughter of the Scriven leader, Auric Godshawk. Fever and her mother eventually leave London to join a group called "The Movement."
The Movement and Shrike
During their journey, Kit Solent gets hurt in an attack. He later dies. Kit's body is then changed into a "Stalker." A Stalker is a mechanical warrior that looks like it's undead. Kit becomes a Stalker named Shrike. Fever's mother performs this transformation.
Shrike doesn't remember his old life as Kit. He only knows the goals of The Movement. The Movement plans to attack London. Their leader, Land Admiral Quercus, challenges London's Mayor to a fight and wins.
Discoveries and Escapes
Fever and her mother, Wavey, go back to a secret vault. This vault is hidden under Auric Godshawk's old home. Inside, they find plans and machines built by Auric. These plans are for making London a moving city!
Shrike, the Stalker, destroys the other Stalkers who were with them and leaves. Fever decides to protect Kit Solent's children. She hopes to keep them safe.
A person named Charley Shallow had followed them. He uses a special magneto gun, which Fever was carrying, to attack Shrike. This gun was made to hurt robots. But it accidentally shoots Fever instead. Fever doesn't die, but she falls down. It is then revealed that she has some mechanical parts inside her body.
Charley thinks he killed Fever and walks away. Shrike doesn't hurt anyone. Fever takes the children and escapes by paddling down a river. They find a group of traveling actors who welcome them.
