What is a Government Cabinet?
A government cabinet is like a special team of top leaders. These leaders are called ministers. Each minister is in charge of a different part of the government. For example, there's a Minister of Finance who handles money, and a Minister of Education who deals with schools.
How the Cabinet Works
The Prime Minister is the head of the cabinet. They lead the meetings and make big decisions with the other ministers. Together, they work to make laws and manage the country. This cabinet was a "coalition" government. This means it was made up of several political parties working together.
Key Members of Fico's First Cabinet
This cabinet had many important people. They each had a special job to help Slovakia. Here are some of the main roles and the people who held them.
The Prime Minister
- Robert Fico was the Prime Minister. He led the entire cabinet. He was in charge from July 4, 2006, to July 8, 2010. His political party was Smer-SD.
Other Important Ministers
- Minister of Finance: Ján Počiatek (from Smer-SD) handled the country's money and budget.
- Minister of Foreign Affairs: Ján Kubiš and later Miroslav Lajčák (both from Smer-SD) managed Slovakia's relationships with other countries.
- Minister of Defence: František Kašický and later Jaroslav Baška (both from Smer-SD) were responsible for the country's military and safety.
- Minister of Education: Ján Mikolaj (from the SNS) looked after schools and learning.
- Minister of Health: Ivan Valentovič and later Richard Raši (both from Smer-SD) oversaw healthcare for everyone.
Deputy Prime Ministers
Some ministers also had the title of Deputy Prime Minister. This means they were very important and could help the Prime Minister.
- Robert Kaliňák (Smer-SD) was the First Deputy Prime Minister. He also served as the Minister of Interior.
- Dušan Čaplovič (Smer-SD) was a Deputy Prime Minister. He focused on topics like European affairs and human rights.
- Ján Mikolaj (Slovak National Party) was also a Deputy Prime Minister.
- Štefan Harabin and later Viera Petríková (both from ĽS-HZDS) also served as Deputy Prime Ministers.
Political Parties in the Cabinet
The cabinet was formed by a group of political parties working together. This is called a coalition government. The main parties were:
- Smer-SD
- ĽS-HZDS
- SNS
These parties won enough votes in the 2006 Slovak parliamentary election to form a "majority coalition." This means they had more than half the seats in the parliament, which made it easier to pass laws.
When the Cabinet Ended
The First Cabinet of Robert Fico served for four years. It started in July 2006 and finished in July 2010. After this cabinet, a new government was formed, known as Radičová's Cabinet.
