Fidel Francisco Martínez Tenorio (born on February 15, 1990) is a talented Ecuadorian football player. He plays as a winger, which means he plays on the sides of the field. Currently, he plays for the LigaPro club El Nacional and is also part of the Ecuador national team.

Club Career Highlights

Starting Young: Youth Teams

Fidel Martínez began his football journey with a team called Caribe Junior. He played there during his youth years. He showed off his amazing skills at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil. His team, Ecuador, won the gold medal at this event, and Fidel was a very important player for them. After Caribe Junior, he moved to Independiente José Terán and then to the Brazilian club Cruzeiro.

Playing for Deportivo Quito

Making His Mark in Ecuador

In 2010, Fidel joined Deportivo Quito. He played his first game on October 16, 2010, against El Nacional. He scored his first goal of the season against ESPOLI. In his first year, he played nine games, scored one goal, and made one assist.

Winning the League Title

The 2011 season was a great one for Martínez. He played in thirty games, scored nine goals, and made five assists. One of his most important goals was in the final match of the Serie A against Emelec. Deportivo Quito became champions of the 2011 season!

Shining in Copa Libertadores

In 2012, Fidel played his first ever Copa Libertadores match, which is a big international club tournament. He scored his first goal in this tournament against Velez Sarsfield, helping his team win 3–0. He also scored against Mexican team Guadalajara in a huge 5–0 victory. Fidel scored three goals and made two assists in the Copa Libertadores group stage. This helped Deportivo Quito reach the last 16 teams, which was a big achievement for the club.

Becoming a Champion with Tijuana

In May 2012, Fidel Martínez moved to the Mexican team Tijuana. He made his first appearance for them on July 20. On December 2, Fidel and Tijuana won their first-ever top-division league title! Fidel helped by assisting both goals in Tijuana's 2–0 win over Toluca.

He continued to score important goals in the 2013 Copa Libertadores. He scored against San Jose of Bolivia, Millonarios from Colombia, and even against the strong Brazilian team Atlético Mineiro. He scored four goals in ten Copa Libertadores games for Tijuana.

More Goals for Tijuana

For the 2013–14 Liga MX season, Fidel was given the number 10 jersey, which is often worn by key players. He scored his first goal of the season on August 4. He also scored his first goal in the CONCACAF Champions League against Firpo. On September 7, he scored two goals in one game for the first time that season, helping Tijuana win 3–0 against Veracruz.

Playing for Leones Negros UdeG

In June 2014, Fidel Martínez joined Leones Negros UdeG on loan. On August 20, 2014, he scored a goal that gave Leones Negros their first Liga MX victory in over 20 years! He even scored against his old team, Tijuana, in a 1–1 draw.

Time with Pumas UNAM

In May 2015, Fidel joined UNAM. He had a good first year, scoring four goals and making six assists. He also scored in the quarter-finals of the Ligilla (the playoff stage) to help his team win 1–0 against Veracruz. Even when he had less playing time later, he still managed to score important goals, like a last-minute equalizer against Atlas.

Fidel Martínez was first called to play for the Ecuador senior team in 2008. He made his debut on December 17 in a tournament in Oman, where he scored the winning goal against Iran. He also played for the Ecuador U20 team in 2009. After some time away, he was called back to the national team in 2013 for 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification matches.
