Nueva Loja (pronounced NWE-vah LOH-hah), also known as Lago Agrio, is a city in Ecuador. It is the capital of the Sucumbíos province. The city was started in the 1960s by a company called Texaco. It began as a base camp for oil operations. In 2022, about 55,627 people lived there.

About Nueva Loja
Nueva Loja is located in the middle of the Sucumbíos province. It is found within the Amazonian forest region. This city is very important for northeastern Ecuador. Its importance comes from the oil that is found and taken out of the ground nearby.
City Names and History
The city was first named after a town in Texas called Sour Lake. This happened when Texaco, an oil company, set up their operations here. Lago Agrio is the Spanish translation for "Sour Lake". The official name of the city is Nueva Loja. This name comes from the fact that the first people who settled here came from the southern province of Loja in Ecuador.

The area around Nueva Loja, known as the Lago Agrio oil field, has faced some environmental challenges. The beautiful rainforest in this region has been greatly affected. There has been serious environmental degradation, which means the natural environment has been harmed. In some places, there is a lot of oil pollution.
