Fidel Roig Matons was a talented artist from Catalonia, a region in Spain. He was born on May 27, 1887, in Girona, Catalonia. Fidel was both a painter and a musician. He later moved to Argentina and spent most of his life there, creating beautiful art and music. He passed away in Mendoza, Argentina on May 26, 1977.

Early Life and Education

Fidel Roig Matons began his journey in art and music at a young age. He studied at the Academia de Belles Arts de Barcelona. This famous art school is now known as the Real Academia Catalana de Bellas Artes "de Sant Jordi". During his time there, he learned from well-known teachers like Lluís Perich and Lluís Graner. They helped him develop his artistic skills.

Moving to Argentina

In 1907, Fidel Roig Matons decided to move to Argentina. He first stayed for a short time in the big city of Buenos Aires. Then, in 1908, he settled down in Mendoza, Argentina. This city in western Argentina became his new home. He would live and work there for the rest of his life.

A Life of Music and Teaching

Fidel Roig Matons was a dedicated teacher and musician. From 1911 to 1925, he taught fine arts at Don Bosco College. He also taught at the Agustin Alvarez National College from 1926 to 1931. In the late 1930s, he was well-known for playing chamber music. This is a type of classical music played by a small group of instruments.

Fidel also helped start important musical groups. In 1922, he co-founded the Orchestral Society of Mendoza. This group helped bring orchestral music to the people of Mendoza.

From Music to Painting

Around 1925, Fidel Roig Matons slowly started to focus more on painting. He gradually spent less time on music. His early paintings often showed the people and traditions of the Huarpes indigenous community. These were the native people of the Mendoza region. He wanted to capture their way of life in his art.

After 1936, Fidel dedicated himself completely to painting. He became very interested in the landscapes of the Andes Andes mountains. He had a big goal: to create a series of paintings about the Crossing of the Andes. This was a famous military journey led by General Jose de San Martin in 1818. San Martin's army crossed the Andes mountains to help Chile gain independence from Spain. Fidel wanted to show this epic journey through his art.

Founding Art Institutions

Just as he helped with music, Fidel also played a key role in developing art in Mendoza. In 1925, he co-founded the Academia Provincial de Bellas Artes of Mendoza. This art academy helped train new artists. It also promoted art in the region.

Later Years

Fidel Roig Matons was a very productive artist. He created many paintings throughout his life. However, after 1952, he had to stop painting. He began to lose his eyesight, which made it impossible for him to continue his artistic work. Fidel Roig Matons passed away in 1977, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful art and music.
