Fidelis Gadzama: Olympic Gold Medalist
Winning Olympic Gold
Fidelis Gadzama was part of the Nigerian 4 × 400 metres relay team at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. In a relay race, four athletes each run a part of the total distance. The Nigerian team initially finished second, earning a silver medal.
The team from the United States originally won the gold medal in that event. However, one of their team members was later found to have used illegal performance-enhancing drugs during the competition. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee formally disqualified the US team from the 4 × 400 metres relay event.
On 21 July 2012, the medals for the 2000 Olympics 4 × 400 m relay were reallocated. This meant that Fidelis Gadzama and the Nigerian team were officially awarded the gold medal. It was a big moment for them, as their hard work was finally recognized with the highest honor.
