Winning at the Sydney Olympics
In the year 2000, Fidelis was part of the Nigerian team. They competed in the 4 x 400 meters relay race at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. The relay race involves four runners, each running 400 meters.
The Nigerian team finished second in the race. They won a silver medal at first. The team from the United States finished first.
The Medal Reallocation
Later, it was discovered that one of the US team members had used illegal performance-enhancing drugs. This is against the rules of fair play in sports. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee decided to disqualify the US team.
On July 21, 2012, the medals for the 2000 Olympics 4 × 400 m relay were changed. The US team lost their gold medal. This meant that Fidelis Gadzama and his Nigerian teammates were officially awarded the gold medal! It was a big moment for them.
