How Fifty Licks Started
Fifty Licks was started by Chad Draizin. He first studied how to brew beer. However, he soon realized that making beer on a large scale wasn't for him. So, in 2009, he decided to try something different: ice cream!
Chad began Fifty Licks as an ice cream truck. This truck only operates during the summer months. In 2011, a local newspaper, The Oregonian, called his ice cream truck one of Portland's "best new food carts."
Growing the Business
In 2013, Chad Draizin opened the very first Fifty Licks ice cream shop. This shop was located in the Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood. A website called Eater even listed Fifty Licks as one of the top new ice cream places in the country that year.
The company became even more popular when a second shop opened in 2017. This new location was on East Burnside Street in the Buckman neighborhood.
What They Offer
Fifty Licks usually has about eleven different ice cream flavors each day. They also offer two soft serve flavors. For adults, they even have special ice cream drinks.
The company also tries to make sure everyone can enjoy their treats. They work hard to provide many non-dairy and vegan options. Their goal is to eventually have half of their products be dairy-free.
What People Say
In 2018, a reporter named Katie Byard visited Portland. She wrote about her experiences trying different foods. She mentioned Fifty Licks, saying it was an "ice cream place" that specialized in "nontraditional flavors." She noted that they make their ice cream base in-house. She also wrote about trying a special chocolate flavor with homemade chocolate sauce.
Fifty Licks has also been featured in the media. The Associated Press reported that the ice cream shop appeared in the Hulu TV show Shrill. Peter Cottell from Thrillist described Fifty Licks as "beloved for simple, elegant flavors in no-nonsense spaces."
Fifty Licks in the Community
Fifty Licks has been involved in community events. In 2018, during some public gatherings, the Fifty Licks food truck gave out free ice cream to people there.
In 2020, Fifty Licks opened its third shop. This new location is in the Slabtown district of the Northwest District neighborhood. Later in 2020, during some public events, one of the shops had a poster taken down from its window.
