Fifty Licks is a popular ice cream shop. It has several locations in Portland, Oregon.

History of Fifty Licks

The owner of Fifty Licks is Chad Draizin. He first studied how to make beer. He realized that making beer in a big factory was not for him.

In 2009, he started Fifty Licks as an ice cream truck. This truck only sells ice cream during the summer. In 2011, a newspaper called The Oregonian said it was one of Portland's "best new food carts." The name "Fifty Licks" is a guess at how many licks it takes to eat one scoop of ice cream!

In 2013, Chad Draizin opened the first permanent Fifty Licks shop. It was in the Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood. A website called Eater listed Fifty Licks as one of the top new ice cream places in the country that year.

A second shop opened in 2017 on East Burnside Street. This shop is in the Buckman neighborhood. This new location made the company even more popular.

Fifty Licks usually has about eleven different ice cream flavors each day. They also offer two soft serve flavors. They even make special ice cream drinks! The shop also tries to have many non-dairy and vegan options. They hope that half of their products will be dairy-free in the future.

In 2018, a reporter named Katie Byard wrote about her visit to Portland. She called it one of the country’s best food cities. She wrote about Fifty Licks. She said the shop makes its own ice cream base. She also mentioned a flavor called "Chocolate as #$%&" which had homemade chocolate sauce. She thought the name fit the flavor!

During some community events in 2018, the Fifty Licks food truck gave free ice cream to people. In 2020, Fifty Licks opened its third shop. This one is in the Slabtown district of the Northwest District neighborhood.

Fifty Licks was also shown in the TV show Shrill on Hulu. Peter Cottell from Thrillist said Fifty Licks is "beloved for simple, elegant flavors."
