What is the Filhiol Mound Site?

The Filhiol Mound Site has a special type of earthwork called a platform mound. Imagine a large, flat-topped hill made by people. This mound is about 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall. Its base is 100 feet (30.5 meters) long and 100 feet (30.5 meters) wide.

How Old is the Mound?

Scientists have dug at the site to learn more. They found pieces of charcoal from deep under the mound. These pieces tell us the mound was built between 700 CE and 1200 CE. That means it's over 800 years old!

How the Mound Was Saved

In the 1850s, a cemetery was started on top of the mound. This might seem strange, but it actually helped protect the mound. Because it was used as a cemetery, people didn't build houses or roads over it. This helped keep the ancient structure safe for us to study today.
