Filodrillia trophonoides is a type of sea snail. It is a marine gastropod mollusk that belongs to the family Borsoniidae. These snails live in the ocean and are known for their unique shells.
What Does It Look Like?
The shell of Filodrillia trophonoides is about 14.4 millimeters (about half an inch) long and 5.2 millimeters wide. It is a solid, white shell that is tall and narrow, shaped like a cone. The top part, called the apex, is a bit blunt, and the bottom is rounded.
The shell has about 9 and a half whorls, which are the turns or spirals of the shell. The very first part of the shell, called the protoconch, has 2 and a half whorls. The first two of these are smooth, while the others have faint, small ridges.
The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is shaped like an oval. The outer edge of this opening, the lip, is sharp and smooth. The shell also has narrow spiral lines or cords that run around it. These cords become more numerous as the shell grows.
Where Does It Live?
This sea snail lives only in Australia. You can find it off the coast of South Australia. This means it is an endemic species, found naturally in only one specific place in the world.
