Who Was Fiorenzo di Lorenzo?
Fiorenzo di Lorenzo is known from a few artworks he signed himself. These include the Madonna of the Recommended from 1476. Another signed work is a special niche with a curved top, two side panels, and a base, made in 1487.
His Life and Work
We also know about Fiorenzo from old city records. He was a "decemvir" in Perugia in 1472. A decemvir was an important city official, like a council member. In that same year, he agreed to paint a large altarpiece. This artwork, called the Madonna and Saints, was for the Santa Maria Nuova church.
Not much is known about when Fiorenzo was born or how he learned to paint. A famous art writer named Giorgio Vasari didn't even mention Fiorenzo by name. However, Vasari might have been talking about him. He wrote that Perugino's father sent his son to work for a painter in Perugia. This painter wasn't super famous but loved art very much.
His Influence on Other Artists
Many experts believe Fiorenzo had a big impact on younger painters. The early works of both Perugino and Pinturicchio show styles similar to Fiorenzo's. This suggests he might have taught them directly.
Many modern art experts have said Fiorenzo painted about fifty pictures. These artworks are quite different from each other. Because of this, scholars have suggested many famous artists might have taught Fiorenzo. Some of the artists mentioned include Pisanello, Benozzo Gozzoli, and Filippo Lippi.
Fiorenzo's Artistic Style
Fiorenzo's real artworks are special because of how he shows space. They also have a clear, soft atmosphere. This is a style also seen in Perugino's paintings.
However, Fiorenzo's art often shows strong feelings. He was also very good at showing different personalities. This is different from Perugino's style, which was sometimes seen as a bit too graceful.
There are 45 paintings in the Pinacoteca of Perugia that have Fiorenzo's name. Among these, eight beautiful panels show Saint Bernardino. These panels look very different from Fiorenzo's known works. They seem more like art from Florence, Italy, in their ideas and movement. Because of this, some people question if Fiorenzo really painted them.
