Firehole Ranch facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Firehole Ranch is a special private guest ranch covering 640 acres. It is located right next to Hebgen Lake in Gallatin County, Montana. A guest ranch is a place where visitors can stay and enjoy activities like horseback riding, fishing, and exploring nature, often experiencing a bit of the old West.

The Story of Firehole Ranch

Firehole Ranch has a long and interesting history. It was first started in the late 1890s by a man named George S. Watkins. Back then, it was known as Watkins Creek Ranch.

From Cattle to Guests

Originally, Watkins Creek Ranch was much bigger than it is today. In 1904, a large part of its land was sold to the Madison Power and Light Company. This land was needed to build the Hebgen Lake Dam, which helps control water and generate electricity. After selling the land, many of Watkins' cattle were sold to Yellowstone National Park. The remaining land was then turned into a "dude ranch," which is another name for a guest ranch. This meant it changed from raising animals to hosting people who wanted to experience ranch life.

A Historic Place

Today, Firehole Ranch is recognized as an important historic site. On December 27, 2006, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list kept by the United States government of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture. It helps protect and preserve these special places for future generations.

Since 1999, Lynda Caine has owned and operated Firehole Ranch, continuing its tradition as a welcoming place for guests.
