Firesteel River (Michigan) facts for kids
The Firesteel River is a cool waterway in Michigan! It's about 18 miles (or nearly 30 kilometers) long. This river flows through Ontonagon County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Discovering the Firesteel River
The Firesteel River is a natural wonder. It flows generally towards the northwest. You can find it between two other rivers, the Flintsteel River and the West Sleeping River. Eventually, the Firesteel River empties its waters into the huge Lake Superior.
Branches of the River
The Firesteel River has two main parts, like arms reaching out. These are called the West Branch and the East Branch. A stream called Black Creek also joins the river. It flows in about three miles north of where the two main branches meet.
The East Branch
The East Branch of the Firesteel River starts in the Mishwabic State Forest. At first, it flows towards the southwest. Along its journey, it picks up water from Senecal Creek. Another stream, also named Black Creek, joins this branch too.
The West Branch
The West Branch of the Firesteel River begins in the Ottawa National Forest. As it flows, it meets Silver Creek. This happens near the edge of the national forest and the state forest. Both the East and West branches flow quite close to each other as they travel through the state forest.
