The First Anglo-Sikh War Memorial is a special monument in Aliwal, Taran Taran, Punjab, India. It was built in 1853 by the British to remember the First Anglo-Sikh War. The memorial honors the brave Sikh soldiers who fought in that war.

History of the Memorial

This memorial, built by the British, was officially declared a protected monument in 1964. This means it is an important historical site that must be preserved. The protection came under the Punjab Ancient, Historical Monuments, Archaeological Sites and Remains Act.

In 2011, the Punjab Heritage and Tourism Promotion Board started a big project to renovate the memorial. They spent 1,000,000 Rupees to make it look new again. More money was invested later, about 30 lakh Rupees. The 55-feet tall memorial was rebuilt using special Chhoti Nanakshahi bricks. A new library was also added, filled with books about history, literature, and religion. The renovation was fully finished in October 2015.

The newly renovated memorial was officially opened on October 6, 2015. Important leaders like Jathedar Avtar Singh Makad and the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee were there. Manpreet Singh Ayali was also present at the opening ceremony.

About the First Anglo-Sikh War

The First Anglo-Sikh War was a conflict that took place between 1845 and 1846. This war led to the British gaining some control over the region of Punjab.

Before the war, the British had many soldiers ready. They had about 86,023 men and 116 guns. The Sikh army had around 60,000 soldiers. The war was very tough, and more than 10,000 Sikh soldiers lost their lives. In the end, the British won the war. This victory helped them to take control of Kasur. After the war, Maharani Jind Kaur continued to rule as a regent for the young Maharaja Duleep Singh.
