The First Baptist Church is an old and important church building. You can find it at 81 St. Paul Street in Burlington, Vermont. It was built a long time ago, in 1864. This church is a great example of a building made in the Italianate style. A famous architect from Boston named John Stevens designed it. Because it's so special, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

About the Church Building
The First Baptist Church is in the middle of Burlington. It stands on the west side of St. Paul Street. The church is a rectangular building with two stories. It has a strong wooden frame.
What the Church Looks Like
The outside of the church is made of red brick. It sits on a foundation of red stone. A tall, three-story tower sticks out from the front. On top of the tower is a unique steeple. This steeple is covered in shiny copper.
The church has many features of the Italianate style. You can see decorative brackets under the roof. The windows on the second floor are rounded at the top. The corners of the building and the tower have shallow supports. The inside of the church has been changed over time. It is not as fancy as it was when it was first built.
History of the First Baptist Church
The Baptist Society of Burlington started in 1830. The very first Baptist church services in the city happened in 1822. At first, they met in rented rooms. Later, they built their own church in 1845. This first church was at Main and Church Streets.
Building a New Home
The church grew too big for its first building. So, they decided to build a larger one. They asked Thomas Hill from Saco, Maine to build it. He had some trouble with the design. So, he suggested John Stevens from Boston. Stevens then created the design for the church you see today. The new church building was officially opened on December 15, 1864.
