The group was created by James Washington. He was Martha Wash's manager. The name "First Ladies of Disco" came from a book. The book was called First Ladies of Disco: 32 Stars Discuss the Era and Their Singing Careers. This book had interviews with the singers who later formed the group.

In March 2015, the First Ladies of Disco released their first song. It was called "Show Some Love." This song came out on Martha Wash's own record label, Purple Rose Records.
