Norma Jean Wright is an American singer born on July 15, 1950. She became famous as the lead singer for the popular band Chic from 1977 to 1978. Chic was known for its amazing soul, R&B, and disco music.

Early Life and Beginnings

Norma Jean Wright was born in a town called Ripley, Tennessee. When she was young, her family moved to Elyria, Ohio. She later went to Ohio State University. Before joining Chic, she sang in a group of three girls called the Topettes. She even toured for a short time with another famous group, The Spinners.

Becoming a Disco Star

In 1977, Norma Jean Wright joined Chic, a band that quickly became a huge hit in the disco world. She was the main singer on Chic's very first album, also called Chic, which came out in 1977. This album had two big songs that many people loved:

  • "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" was a top 10 hit on both pop and R&B charts in early 1978.
  • "Everybody Dance" also did very well, reaching the top 40 on pop charts and top 15 on R&B charts.

Solo Career and Other Projects

Norma Jean Wright decided to leave Chic in 1978 to start her own singing career. She released her first solo album, Norma Jean, in July 1978. This album had a song called "Saturday" that became a top 20 R&B hit. The album was produced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers, who were also part of the Chic team.

In January 1980, she had another top 20 R&B hit with her song "High Society." Her first album also featured other popular songs like "Sorcerer," "Having a Party," and "I Like Love." Later, she released more songs such as "Hold Me Lonely Boy" (1979), "Love Attack" (1983), "Shot in the Dark" (1984), and "Every Bit of This Love" (1985). In 2004, a British dance group used a part of her song "I Like Love" for their own hit song.

Norma Jean Wright has also worked as a background singer for many other famous artists. Some of these include Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, and Madonna. She often performs with Luci Martin, who was also a singer in Chic. In 2018, she joined a group called First Ladies of Disco and toured with them. In March 2019, she released a new song with the group called "Don't Stop Me Now."

In 2019, Norma Jean Wright received an award for her amazing career achievements from David Serero.

In 2024, Norma Jean Wright released her first EP, which is like a mini-album, called "Living And Loving Life." She also released two new songs that year, "Around Me" and "In Love Again."
