The First National Bank of Davenport is a special building in Davenport, Iowa. It is also known as Brenton Bank or The Brenton. This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important place in American history. It was added to the list in 2018.
Building History
This three-story building was built in 1967. It was first used by the First National Bank of Davenport. This bank was part of a larger group called Brenton Bank in Iowa.
Modern Design
The building was designed in a style called the Modern Movement. It was meant to be part of a bigger plan for new buildings. But those plans changed. So, the bank building was built on its own.
The building shows a special type of design called New Formalism. This style uses strong shapes and often has a raised base. The First National Bank building and the Davenport Public Library are the best examples of this style in Davenport.
New Formalism was a new way of building. It moved away from older styles that copied historical looks. It also used simpler forms of Modernism. This building highlights its strong structure. It has a frame made of concrete and steel. A local company, Stewart-Robison-Laffan, designed it.
New Life for the Building
After the bank closed, the Davenport Community School District used the building. They had their offices and other programs there. In July 2018, the school district moved to a different building.
Then, a company called Newbury Living started a new project. They turned the building into a place with different uses. This project cost $6.7 million. It was finished in 2020.
Now, the building has 38 new apartments on the second and third floors. The first floor is a big open space for people to gather. The old bank vault in the basement was even turned into a fun gaming room!
