The First Presbyterian Church in Hastings, Minnesota, is a beautiful and historic building. It is also known as the First United Presbyterian Church. You can find it at 602 Vermillion Street in the heart of downtown Hastings. This church is so special that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The church is famous for its amazing Romanesque architecture. This style makes the building look very strong and grand. You can see its thick walls, rounded arches, and big towers. It also has fancy decorations called arcading.

History of the Church Building

The church group, or congregation, started way back in 1855. Reverend Charles LeDuc helped to create it. At first, they built a stone church. But by 1875, they decided they needed a bigger, newer church.

Designing the New Church

The design for this new church was created by an architect named Charles N. Daniels. Building a church takes a lot of time and money. Because of money problems, it took almost seven years to finish the building. Even so, it was ready enough to hold its first services in 1881.

Fire and Rebuilding

A view of the church

In 1907, something dramatic happened. Lightning struck the church's tall steeple! This started a big fire that badly damaged the inside of the church. It was almost completely burned out.

To fix the church, they hired a new architect, Harry Wild Jones, from Minneapolis. His job was to make the church look as much like the original as possible. So, he designed both the inside and outside to match the old style. Thanks to his work, the church was restored to its former glory.
