First officer facts for kids
A first officer is the second pilot on an aircraft. You might also hear them called the "co-pilot." They work closely with the Captain, who is the main pilot and leader of the flight.
The first officer is second-in-command of the aircraft. This means they are very important! If the Captain ever can't fly the plane, the first officer is ready to take over. They make sure the flight continues safely.
What Does a First Officer Do?
First officers and Captains share the job of flying the plane. For each flight, one pilot is the "Pilot Flying" (PF). This pilot controls the aircraft. The other pilot is the "Pilot Not Flying" (PNF). This pilot handles things like radio communication and navigation.
Even when the first officer is the Pilot Flying, the Captain is always in charge. The Captain is responsible for everyone on board and the aircraft itself. But in daily flights, both pilots have many similar and important tasks.
Where Do They Sit?
In the cockpit, the Captain usually sits in the left seat. The first officer, or co-pilot, sits in the right seat. From these positions, they work together as a team. One pilot focuses on flying. The other helps with maps, instruments, and talking to air traffic control. This teamwork is key for safe flights.
Becoming a First Officer
To become a first officer, pilots need lots of training. They must earn special licenses and gain flight experience. Many first officers are working towards becoming Captains themselves one day. This role helps them learn and grow in their aviation careers.
