Exploring the History of Fish Farm Mounds

This ancient burial ground was given to the state of Iowa in 1935. The Fish family donated the land. In 1968, it became an archaeological state preserve. This means it is a protected area where scientists study human history. The preserve was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This list recognizes important historical sites in the United States.

Location and Ancient Landscapes

The Fish Farm Mounds State Preserve is in a unique area of Iowa. This region is called the Driftless Area. It is special because it was not covered by glaciers during the last ice age. Most of the land around it was flattened by ice. But this area remained untouched. The preserve is also close to where the Upper Iowa River flows into the Mississippi River. This made it an important spot for ancient communities.
