Discover the Story of the Fisher–Nash–Griggs House

The Fisher–Nash–Griggs House gets its name from its first three owners. It was built between 1852 and 1857. Over many years, until 1916, the house was changed and made bigger. All these changes kept the house looking like its original Greek Revival style.

George Smith Fisher had the first part of the house built in the mid-1850s. People think that Sylvanius Grow designed it. He also designed another famous house nearby. Before 1857, the Fishers added a dining room to the south side. The house grew even more in the early 1860s. A western bedroom and a summer kitchen were added.

Later, in the 1870s, John Fiske Nash bought the house. He added a bathroom and a secure vault area. In 1910, another bathroom was added on the east side. Two years later, the front porch was made longer with fancy Ionic order columns. In 1915, a porte-cochere was built on the east. This is a covered entrance where people could drive their carriages. The next year, the east side was extended, and a second floor was added. These were the last big changes to the house's design.

What Makes the Fisher–Nash–Griggs House Special?

The house sits about 100 feet (30 meters) back from Ottawa Avenue. This street is very wide, like a boulevard, with a grassy area in the middle. The house itself is made of brick. It is a great example of high-style Greek Revival architecture. This means it has many features that show off the Greek Revival look.

Why is This House Important?

The Fisher–Nash–Griggs House is important because of its amazing architecture. It's one of the best local examples of the Greek Revival style.
