How Fishs Eddy Started

Fishs Eddy was founded in 1986 by two people, Julie Gaines and David Lenovitz. One day, they got a little lost while traveling in Upstate New York. They found a small town called Fishs Eddy.

During their trip, they discovered an old barn. Inside, there were many dishes from restaurants that had survived a fire! Julie and David bought all the dishes. They took them back to their apartment in Manhattan. They used these dishes to open their first store at 889 Broadway, close to Union Square. They also opened a warehouse in Jersey City, New Jersey to store more items.

In 2018, a special graphic novel (a comic book that tells a long story) was published about the store's history. It was called Minding the Store. Julie Gaines wrote it, and her son, who is also David Lenovitz's son, helped draw the pictures.

Since 2021, Fishs Eddy has offered tours of its amazing collection of old dishes. These tours are on the second floor of their store. Many of the dishes are "namesake plates," which means they have special names or designs. In 2022, an artist named Ben Lenovitz started drawing pictures of pets and other animals right at Fishs Eddy.
