The Fitchburg Yarn Mill is a really old building in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. You can find it at 1428 Main Street. It was built way back in 1907. Over the years, it got bigger and bigger. For more than 60 years, it was one of the biggest factories in the city. This factory made yarn, which is used to make cloth. A famous architect named Frank Sheldon designed this important building. In 2016, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special place worth protecting.

Discovering the Fitchburg Yarn Mill

The Fitchburg Yarn Mill is a historic building. It stands between Main Street and the Nashua River. This location is just northwest of downtown Fitchburg.

What the Mill Looked Like

The main building of the mill is huge. It is about 500 feet (152 meters) long. It is also about 110 feet (33 meters) wide. This makes it one of the largest factory buildings in the city. The mill has three stories. It is built from red bricks.

The windows have rounded tops. They also have concrete sills at the bottom. Simple brick columns separate the window sections. Connected to the main mill are other parts. These include a two-story office building. There is also an engine house. A tall, round brick chimney stands nearby.

A Look Back: The Mill's Story

The Fitchburg Yarn Company started in 1906. The factory building was finished in 1907. That's when they began making yarn. The mill grew over time. It reached its current size in 1919. This happened when the eastern part was built.

Frank Sheldon designed the building. He was an "industrial architect." This means he designed factories and other large work buildings. His company was in Providence, Rhode Island. They designed many important mills across the eastern United States.

Local business leaders ran the company. The Lyman family was very involved. They managed the mill for most of its history. The mill stopped making yarn around 1970. After that, the building was changed. It became apartments for people to live in.
