Fitzroy is a small community located on East Falkland, one of the main islands in the Falkland Islands. It is split into two parts, Fitzroy North and Fitzroy South. A river called the Fitzroy River flows through the area. This river is special because its water level changes with the ocean tides. It gets its water from a lake near Mount Whickham.
The famous scientist Charles Darwin crossed this river in 1834 during his second visit to the islands. The settlement is named after Robert FitzRoy. He was the captain of the ship HMS Beagle, which Darwin sailed on for his famous voyages. Robert FitzRoy also created the first weather forecasts for the United Kingdom. Fitzroy is situated on a bay known as Port Pleasant.

A Difficult Day in 1982
During the 1982 Falklands War, Fitzroy became a significant location. On June 8, 1982, two British naval support ships were near Fitzroy. These ships were Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram. They were carrying soldiers from The Welsh Guards. The ships were bringing supplies and troops to help other soldiers already in the area.
While the ships were in the waters off Fitzroy, they were attacked by the Argentine Air Force. This event is sometimes called the Bluff Cove air attacks. The ships were bombed, causing damage and sadly, many lives were lost.
Remembering the Heroes
Today, there are two special memorials at Fitzroy. They are located on each side of a small bay. Each monument remembers one of the ships and the people who were lost. The dedications on the memorials are written in both English and Welsh. They serve as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifices made during the conflict.
