A Holiday Surprise
The story begins with the Famous Five meeting at Kirrin Station. They soon learn that Aunt Fanny and Uncle Quentin are going on holiday to Spain. This means the Five will stay at home with Joan, the family's cook.
Meeting Jo and a Mystery Begins
While enjoying their time on the beach, the Five meet a unique gypsy girl named Jo. Soon after, something strange happens: their house is burgled! Even worse, George is taken away by unknown people.
A Daring Rescue Plan
Jo bravely brings a message asking for some important papers in exchange for George's return. However, the wrong documents are given, so George is not set free. Jo then leads Julian and Dick to a house high up on a cliff, where George is being held captive in a tower.
Swapping Places and an Escape
In a very clever move, Jo climbs up some ivy and secretly swaps places with George! Later, Jo manages to lock up three of the people who took George, including her own father. Jo, Julian, George, Dick, and Timmy the dog then make a thrilling escape by boat.
Police Action and a New Home
The police are quickly told about what happened. Three of the people involved try to get away in a helicopter, but it crashes. At the end of the adventure, Joan shares some good news: her cousin would like to take care of Jo, as Jo's father will be unable to look after her.
