Five on a Hike Together is the tenth exciting book in the Famous Five series by Enid Blyton. It was first published in 1951, taking readers on another thrilling adventure with Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and their loyal dog, Timmy.

The Adventure Begins

The Famous Five – Julian, Dick, Anne, and their cousin George – are on a school break. They decide to go on a fun hiking trip together. Julian plans for them to stay at a cozy bed and breakfast called Blue Pond Farm.

On their way, George's dog, Timmy, gets a bit too curious. He hurts his leg while exploring a rabbit hole. Julian and George quickly take Timmy to Mr. Gaston, a kind local animal expert, for help. Mr. Gaston treats Timmy's leg, and he and his wife invite Julian and George to stay for dinner.

Meanwhile, Dick and Anne head towards Blue Pond Farm on their own.

A Mysterious Night

Dick and Anne take a wrong turn and get lost. They hear strange bells ringing and follow a light, hoping to find Blue Pond Farm. Instead, they meet an elderly woman, Mrs. Taggart, who can't hear very well.

Mrs. Taggart tells them to leave because her son wouldn't like them there. But she eventually agrees to let Anne sleep in a small loft. Dick has to sleep in the barn.

During the night, Dick wakes up to someone calling his name. He is given a strange message: "Two Trees. Gloomy Water. Saucy Jane. And Maggie knows too." He also gets a piece of paper with more clues.

Unraveling the Clues

The next morning, Mrs. Taggart’s son returns and chases Dick away. Dick and Anne finally get directions to Blue Pond Farm. They reunite with Julian and George and tell them about the bells and the mysterious message.

Julian figures out that the bells were a signal. Someone had escaped from a nearby prison! The escaped person was supposed to meet "Dirty Dick" Taggart at the barn.

The children report what happened to a village policeman. But the policeman doesn't believe them. He says the escaped person has already been caught.

Julian, being the leader, decides they should investigate themselves. He thinks Dick's message is a set of instructions. It might lead them to some stolen treasure! He believes the treasure is hidden in a boat called the Saucy Jane.

Searching for the Treasure

The Five decide to hike to a ruined house called Two-Trees. It's located near a marshy lake called Gloomy Water, high up on the moors.

The next day, Maggie and Dirty Dick also arrive at Gloomy Water. They are annoyed to see the children there, as they are looking for the treasure too.

The Famous Five paddle onto the lake on a homemade raft. They don't find anything at first. Julian then realizes that "Tall Stone," one of the clues on the paper Dick received, must be a landmark. It will guide them to where the Saucy Jane is hidden.

The next morning, they find the Saucy Jane at the bottom of the lake! Maggie and Dirty Dick appear in their own boat. But Julian cleverly tells them the children are returning to school tomorrow. This makes Maggie and Dirty Dick row back to shore.

Julian bravely dives to the bottom of the lake. He finds a bag of treasure, but it's too heavy to bring up alone.

The Big Discovery

Near midnight, the Five return to the lake on their raft. Julian and Dick dive down to the boat together. They manage to pull up the heavy bag of treasure. It turns out to be valuable jewelry that was stolen from a queen!

After recovering the jewels, the Famous Five manage to avoid Maggie and Dirty Dick. They walk to the village of Reebles and call Mr. Gaston. He drives them to a police station.

At the police station, the children hand over the jewels and tell their amazing story. Maggie and Dirty Dick, who got stuck in the marshland, are arrested by the police. The police promise to drive the children back to their schools in time.
