History of Five Points
Five Points got its name in 1885 because five roads meet at one spot in the town. Before that, its post office was called "Lystra." The town officially became a town (this is called incorporated) in 1915. This makes it the oldest incorporated town in Chambers County. The local Baptist Church was the first building to use the name "Five Points" in 1929.
Early Innovations
Five Points was special because it was the first town of its size to get electricity from Alabama Power in 1925. To make this happen, the people living there had to put up their own power poles. These poles stretched all the way from Stroud to White Plains.
School History
This town is also home to Alabama's first consolidated high school. This means it brought together students from different smaller schools into one larger school. The first Five Points High School was a big brick building built in 1916. It had two floors and a large auditorium that could seat 400 people. It was one of the few rural schools in the state with its own electric and water systems.
The original school building was replaced in 1939. Sadly, a fire destroyed that building in 1974. The school building you see today was built after that fire.
Town Leadership
In 1992, the town elected its first African-American mayor, Geneva Bledsoe. This was an important moment for the community.
Geography of Five Points
