The flag of Annandale, Virginia is a special symbol for the community. It was chosen on August 16, 2006, by a group called the Annandale Chamber of Commerce. This flag is not official because Annandale is not a city. It's a "census-designated place," which means it's a community that is counted for population but is part of a larger county. Annandale is under the rules of Fairfax County.

What Does the Annandale Flag Look Like?

The flag has a bright sky blue background. This blue color helps the flag stand out. There are three white bars that start from the edges of the flag. They move inward towards the center. These white bars represent Cannon Park, a well-known spot in Annandale. This park is where two main roads, Backlick Road and Columbia Pike, meet.

The white bars lead to a red oval shape in the middle of the flag. Inside this red oval, you'll see a light blue dogwood tree. A "stylized" tree means it's drawn in a simple, artistic way. Sitting on one of the tree's branches is a red cardinal. This bird is also drawn in a stylized way.

How the Annandale Flag Was Created

The idea for the Annandale flag came from Sami Azzam Kalifa. He owns a flower shop in Annandale and used to lead the local Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber of Commerce is a group of businesses that work together to help their community.

Sami Kalifa shared his feelings when the flag was first raised. He said that Annandale was very important to him. He mentioned that even though Annandale doesn't have a mayor or city status, it now has its own flag. He felt this was a big step for the community.

The Annandale Chamber of Commerce chose a design made by a local resident. To make the flag even better, they asked Peter Ansoff for help. Peter Ansoff lives in Annandale and is the president of the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA). This group studies flags.

Peter Ansoff then put together a team of NAVA members. They looked at the original design and suggested many improvements. Ansoff showed the Chamber of Commerce 27 different versions of the flag. The people of Annandale then voted to pick their favorite design.
